Joseph H. Berry Subdivision

Prior to the 1700's, the Detroit area was inhabited by several nations of Native Americans.  In 1701, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac led a group of French Pioneers to this area and founded Detroit.

The French Government granted land to these early pioneers as an incentive for farming and raising their families.  In 1745, the area now occupied by the Joseph H. Berry Subdivision was granted to Antoine Beaubien and Jean-Baptiste Beaubien.

In 1902, Joseph H. Berry purchased the property then known as Robert Beaubien Farm.  Mr. Berry was one of the largest landholders in Wayne County.  He was a prominent executive in several business interests including the varnish, lacquer, and flypaper trades.  The Berry Brothers Company had nine branch offices across the country.

The Joseph H. Berry Subdivision was established in 1914 by Mr. Berry's heirs: Charlotte Berry Sherrard, Lottie Dwight Berry Hoyt, and Alice Dwight Berry Lodge.  Once established, the Berry Subdivision was subdivided and platted as we know it today.  By 1920, the streets were paved and residential housing development began on Parkview Drive, Lodge Drive, Fiske Drive and Dwight Drive.

Thanks to the efforts of dedicated residents and community leaders, the Joseph H. Berry Subdivision Historic District was designated in 1978 to preserve its historic legacy.  Today our neighborhood is comprised of a canal, apartments, parks and over 100 homes.
